EPA announces new selections to Science Advisory Board

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced the selection of new members to its Science Advisory Board (SAB), which provides expert scientific advice to EPA leadership.

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin announced the new selections in April.

EPA said the well-qualified experts come from a broad range of scientific disciplines. The SAB brings the experience and expertise needed to provide Gold Standard scientific advice to EPA leaders as they advance EPA’s core mission of protecting human health and the environment, the agency said.

“The Trump EPA has an unwavering commitment to Gold Standard Science,” said Zeldin. “Reconstituting the Science Advisory Board will provide rigorous, independent, evidence-based, scientific advice consistent with its legal obligations to advance our core mission of protecting human health and the environment.

The newly appointed SAB will consist of a chair and 36 members. Of those members, 19 received dual appointments to the SAB and one of its five SAB subcommittees or the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee.

Dr. Charles B. Bott, PhD, PE, BCEE, chief technology officer at Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) was appointed chair of the SAB.

Bott has led technology, innovation, and research and development for HRSD’s wastewater treatment plants and interceptor systems since 2009. HRSD has attained 10 active patents, with four additional patents pending under his leadership.

“I am honored to be nominated as chair of the EPA Science Advisory Committee,” said Bott. “I look forward to embracing this challenge and leveraging my experience in environmental technology and infrastructure to help translate robust science and engineering into practical, impactful policies. I’m excited by the challenge, humbled by the responsibility, and committed to supporting rigorous, independent science and engineering in service of the public.”

Background

The SAB was established in 1978 by the Environmental Research, Development and Demonstration Authorization Act to provide independent advice to the EPA Administrator on scientific and technical matters underlying the agency’s major policies and actions.

Similar to the Biden administration and in line with typical processes for renewal of Federal Advisory Committees at EPA, the Trump EPA opened the process of soliciting candidate nominations from the public on May 1, 2025, and renewed the charter for the SAB on September 9, 2025.
