DC Water has selected the Water Smart Alliance, a joint venture of Stantec and AtkinsRéalis, to manage its water capital improvement program (CIP).

Under the joint venture, the team will oversee a five-year, $43 million (USD) water management program, which will center around updating aging infrastructure, improving system reliability, integrating advanced technology and increasing operational efficiency.

“This is a significant opportunity to support DC Water in bringing innovation to its water program and the people it serves,” said David Goldwater, senior vice president of public policy at Stantec. “We’re looking forward to sharing our global expertise at the local level to bring a fresh perspective to the initiative.”

The team will assess current efforts and advise on collaborative delivery for projects within the CIP. Additionally, Stantec said WSA will lead design and engineering of various program components.

DC Water provides water and sewer services to millions of residents and its distribution system includes more than 1,300 miles of underground pipe. In some cases, this includes cast iron pipes dating back to the 1800s. WSA will help address this aging infrastructure and will support Lead Free DC, an initiative to ensure lead service lines are identified and replaced throughout the District of Columbia.

“DC Water is widely recognized as an industry pioneer having incorporated several cutting-edge technologies and processes and is leading the digitalization charge among its peers,” said Steve Morriss, President, U.S., Latin America, and Minerals & Metals, AtkinsRéalis. “We are excited to bring our brand of innovative, collaborative and data-driven programmatic solutions to reinvigorate DC Water’s program for service and capital improvement.”

AtkinsRéalis and Stantec have successfully collaborated to develop program management services for various clients for more than 14 years, including the national flood mapping and risk mitigation program for FEMA and Thames Water technical Partner Framework.
