Bowden brings more than 25 years of wastewater research and process experience to Gannett Fleming. An expert in modeling and operations design for aerobic and anaerobic treatment systems, he has specialized knowledge in biological, physical, and chemical nutrient removal processes. Based in the South Plainfield, New Jersey, office, he also provides leadership support for the company’s national Water Business Line.
Most recently, Bowden managed an alternatives analysis study to identify biological and physical/chemical technology options for the treatment of high-strength filtrate at DC Water’s Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant in Washington, D.C. A high-profile project, the study sought to identify the most cost-effective option for reducing the ammonia load returned to the mainstream plant, ultimately leading to the selection of the DEMON® deammonification technology and the largest facility of its type in the world. He also served as technical director for the Nitrogen Removal Applied Research Program, an initiative of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.
Bowden holds a doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Oklahoma State University. As a contributing author to the 5th Edition of Wastewater Engineering: Treatment and Resource Recovery textbook – a widely used and industry-recognized technical resource for wastewater treatment published by Metcalf & Eddy – he has focused on bringing advanced and innovative technologies to the forefront and promoting their implementation and practice where they bring value to municipal agencies and owners of water reclamation facilities. He is member of the Water Environment Federation, a national non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the awareness of the value of water and providing a platform for water sector innovation.
