WATER POLICY: Mayors Summit Convenes in Washington, D.C.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors held a Mayors Water Summit Dec. 8-9 at the St. Regis Hotel in downtown Washington, D.C. There was a strong turnout for the meeting, which was presided over by the co-chairs of the Mayors Water Council ? Mayor Jennifer Hosterman, of Pleasanton, Calif., and Mayor Brian Stratton of Schenectady, N.Y.

The meeting, considering its location in Washington, D.C., had an emphasis on numerous major federal water issues. Included in the items discussed were federal water mandates, urban flood management policy changes and federal pollution clean-up of the Chesapeake Bay.

Related to the critical problem of water finance, the meeting included sessions on ?A Discussion Concerning Pension Funds as a Possible Source of Capital for Public Infrastructure? and a ?Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Financing? series of talks ? ?Partnerships Can Save Money and Provide CSO Solutions? by Eric Petersen, Hawkins Delafield & Wood, and ?CSO Strategies and Financial Management? by Mayor Gregory Ballard of Indianapolis. across the country discussed issues of the day at the U.S. Conference of Mayors Water Council meeting in December.
