Water Finance Conference Kicks Off Tomorrow in Cleveland

UIM: Water Utility Infrastructure Management, the leading journal of finance and management for water and wastewater professionals, is hosting its first Water Finance Conference beginning tomorrow at the Great Lakes Science Center in downtown Cleveland, Ohio.

The theme of the Water Finance Conference is ?Innovative Strategies for Funding Water, Wastewater and Stormwater Infrastructure? and is aimed at reaching municipal finance officers, utility CFOs and financial consultants in those three areas.

The event, which will run through Wednesday, Sept. 2, features an agenda with presentations and panel discussions covering three main topic areas: rate setting and affordability; private financing and private capital investment for public utilities; and trends in public utility financing.

?Without a doubt, finding money to solve our water infrastructure problems is the biggest challenge facing our cities,? said Bernie Krzys, publisher and CEO of UIM. ?There are many innovative methods available to consider in addressing these finance issues. To bring a focus to this, we are holding the first annual Water Finance Conference. Preparation for the conference has been under way for some time and we have assembled an outstanding group of water professionals to assist in developing the agenda.?

On the afternoon of Sept. 1, there will be a networking break from 2:45-3:30 p.m. During the break, a session of networking roundtables, each addressing a different topic related to water finance is planned. Attendees will have the opportunity to join a discussion which will led by a roundtable facilitator.

Keynote Speaker George Hawkins

On the evening of Sept. 1, there will be a networking reception beginning at 5:45 p.m., featuring keynote speaker George Hawkins, general manager of DC Water. Hawkins? impressivebackground makes him one of the most knowledgeable experts in the water,wastewater and stormwater industry.

During his time at DC Water, Hawkins hasimplemented an ambitious 10-year program to improve aging infrastructure whilecomplying with ever-developing regulatory requirements. DC Water has anoperating and capital budget of nearly $1 billion and provides drinking waterdelivery and wastewater collection and treatment for over 600,000 people in theDC area and an additional 1.6 million people in nearby counties in Maryland andVirginia.

Hawkins previously served as Director of theDistrict Department of the Environment and has also held senior positions withthe U.S. EPA and served Vice President Al Gore on the National PerformanceReview. Hawkins began his careerpracticing law for the Boston firm Ropes & Gray. He is a member of the Barin Massachusetts and the District of Columbia.

The conference will be held at the Great Lakes Science Center in downtown Cleveland, conveniently located near hotels and popular attractions, including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Progressive Field and Playhouse Square.
