Trenchless Technology Announces 2014 Top 50 Trenchless Design Firms

BRECKSVILLE, Ohio: Trenchless Technology magazine, the leading publication covering the worldwide trenchless marketplace, has released its 2014 Top 50 Trenchless Design Firms. 2014 marks the 18th year the magazine has put together this annual list of trenchless engineering work in North America.

Topping the 2014 list is AECOM Technology Corp., which reported in the Trenchless Technology survey that it had more than $169.2 million in trenchless billings for 2013 and more than $8.540 billion in overall North American billings. AECOM’s totals also include those of URS Corp., which it recently acquired. URS Corp. had been a staple of the Top 50 list in previous years.

Rounding out the Top 10 Trenchless Design Firms from No. 2 to No. 10 (with their trenchless billings) are: Hatch Mott MacDonald ($147.850 million); CH2M Hill ($123.200 million); Black & Veatch Corp. ($79 million); CDM Smith ($65.4 million); MWH Global ($57.624 million); Arcadis U.S. ($51.810 million); Stantec ($51.044 million); Brown and Caldwell ($36.600 million) and Cardno ($36.055 million).

Total trenchless billings for 2013, as reported by the firms who are listed in the Top 50, are more than $1.141 billion, which is more than $194.13 million over 2012’s totals.

All trenchless and overall billings represent work in North America only (does not include worldwide earnings). Participants were also asked to include their percent of trenchless work relative to the total company billings, number of trenchless specialists and the number of trenchless projects completed between the years 2008-2013.

The landscape of the trenchless engineering community has changed over the last several years, with numerous acquisitions occurring and those are reflected in the 2014 survey and will continue to be reflected in future surveys. The survey allows the magazine and its readers a glimpse into just how much the trenchless design market continues to expand.

Trenchless Technology wishes to thank everyone who participated in this year’s survey. For more information on how to participate, contact Trenchless Technology managing editor Sharon M. Bueno at

The entire list is published in the December issue of the magazine (in print, online at and on the app for your iPad), along with some of the great projects completed by the Top 10 firms.
