Evoqua Water Technologies’ Alkagen AQ solution has been selected to control odor and extend the useful life of existing infrastructure at the Siesta Key wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Sarasota, Fla. The Siesta Key WWTP services the Siesta Key barrier island, home to the No. 1 rated beach in the United States, according to Trip Advisor.
The Siesta Key WWTP processes approximately 1.3 million gallons of wastewater daily and provides service to over 1 million tourists each year. The close proximity to beaches and high tourism volume make odor control and environmental pollution mitigation a top priority.
Due to the age of the infrastructure, Sarasota County elected to decommission the wastewater treatment plant and convert it to a master lift station, rather than execute a costly rehabilitation project. During the transition, a solution was needed to mitigate hydrogen sulfide odors from the effluent of an underperforming chemical scrubber. Alkagen AQ solution was selected since it could be fed directly into the influent stream, thereby locking hydrogen sulfide in liquid form and reducing the load on the chemical scrubber.
“The novel approach of adding Alkagen solution directly to the headworks influent piping reduced the loading on the existing chemical scrubbers, thus allowing them to more effectively mitigate hydrogen sulfide odors. This makes the plant a better neighbor for the surrounding residential and tourism area,” said Michael Mylett, manager of utility operations for Sarasota County.
Evoqua’s Municipal Services division executed a Build, Own, Operate agreement with Sarasota County to supply Alkagen AQ solution along with a feed and storage platform at the Siesta Key WWTP. Alkagen AQ solution is a rapidly dissolving and controllable pH shift technology that provides sulfide control within seconds of application. It also reduces the impact of fats, oils and grease (FOG) in collection systems and provides a beneficial alkaline supplement. Evoqua has more than 40 years of experience in odor and corrosion control.
