The IADB program, known as the ?Emerging and Sustainable Cities Initiative??(ESCI) is a new program that is focused on assisting emerging cities with the challenges?associated with rapid urbanization?while making the city environmentally and financially sustainable. The main focus of the initiative is on cities with a population?of 100,000 to two million, whose economies?are growing?rapidly. The ESCI was officially launched in February 2012.
?
It is interesting to note that the Latin American and Caribbean region (LAC) is the second most urbanized region in the world. It has gone from 62 percent urbanization in 1980 to 82 percent urbanization in 2012. Along with transportation infrastructure and social infrastructure services, established operational water/wastewater and sanitation services are critical components for achieving and maintaining sustainable cities.
