AWWA Urges Change to EPA Spending Bill

The American Water Works Association (AWWA) is urging the U.S. EPA to make changes to a 2016 spending bill.

In letters to leaders of U.S. House and Senate Appropriations Committee, the AWWA attempted to persuade EPA to to remove Section 428 from?S.1645, the 2016 spending bill that funds the U.S. EPA. The provision would prohibit certain sewage discharges into the Great Lakes.

AWWA Government Affairs Chief G. Tracy Mehan wrote that the provision would require Clean Water Act primacy agencies to rewrite permits for publicly owned treatment works.

“By establishing a new and immediate standard for treatment of wet weather flows, and by setting a new and immediate deadline for combined sewer overflow abatement, this legislation will undo decades of federal, state, and local government planning, design, and construction,” Mehan wrote.
