As part of National Water Quality Month this August, AWWA said it is launching an eight-week video campaign to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA).
For the past 50 years, the SDWA has set strong water quality standards for the nation’s drinking water and established a regulatory framework to safeguard public health and safety of U.S. citizens. AWWA will be celebrating the landmark legislation through a series of informative and inspiring videos featuring AWWA President Cheryl Porter, AWWA CEO David LaFrance, national health experts, water sector experts and AWWA members. Their insights and experiences will provide valuable perspectives on the importance of the SDWA and ongoing efforts to maintain and improve water quality standards.
Each week in August and September, a new video will be released on AWWA social media highlighting achievements of the SDWA and showcasing the vital work of water professionals in protecting this essential resource.
“National Water Quality Month is a perfect time to celebrate the achievements of the Safe Drinking Water Act and everyone who works to keep our water safe,” said AWWA President Cheryl Porter.
The video series will run through Source Water Protection Week (Sept. 29-Oct. 5), which will highlight SDWA’s regulations on drinking water standards, source water assessments, wellhead protection, and other key provisions directly contributing to safeguarding the quality and availability of drinking water sources.
AWWA began its celebration of the SDWA 50th anniversary earlier this year with a ‘Toast to Tap’ at the AWWA Fly-In in Washington, D.C. Leading up to the anniversary in December, AWWA will continue to recognize the Act’s significant contributions to improving and protecting water quality and emphasize the need for continued investment and scientific evaluation to address emerging challenges.
