The Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies (AMWA) has announced that Dan Hartnett, the association’s chief policy officer, has been appointed to serve as interim chief executive officer, effective July 1, 2026.
Hartnett joined AMWA in 2007 as a legislative assistant and has served in several leadership roles since that time, including manager of legislative affairs, director of legislative affairs, chief advocacy officer, and most recently, chief policy officer.
His recent work has been focused on leading AMWA’s federal policy agenda, representing the interests of the nation’s largest publicly owned drinking water systems before Congress and federal agencies. Prior to joining AMWA, Hartnett worked on Capitol Hill as a staffer to former U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons of Connecticut, bringing a strong legislative background to the water sector.
“Dan is highly respected across the water community and brings a deep understanding of the issues facing large drinking water systems,” said AMWA Board President Jeff Szabo, CEO of Suffolk County Water Authority. “His policy expertise, steady leadership, and strong relationships with federal partners make him exceptionally well‑suited to guide AMWA during this transition.”
AMWA begins search for new CEO
In his new role, Hartnett will oversee all aspects of executive leadership across AMWA’s operations, programs, and policy initiatives, while the Board of Directors conducts a national search for the association’s next CEO.
“It is an honor to serve AMWA and our members during this transition, and I am grateful to the Board for trusting me with this responsibility,” said Hartnett. “My focus is to keep the association moving forward and to support utility leaders as they navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead. I look forward to listening to our members and subscribers and working with AMWA’s talented staff to ensure we continue delivering value and momentum in the months ahead.”
AMWA will soon begin the process of selecting a search firm to support the CEO search. During the transition, AMWA’s staff will continue advancing the association’s mission and delivering high‑value resources and support to its members.
