Walking through the exhibit halls at industry trade shows such as the AWWA?s Annual Conference & Exposition (ACE), it doesn?t take long to realize the municipal water utility industry is up to speed on its technological innovation. From condition assessment AMA data analytics to filtration systems, the technology is expanding so quickly it?s often difficult to keep up.

In June, President Obama signed into law the Water Resources Reform and Development Act, which includes the new Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Authority (WIFIA). Supported by AWWA and other water organizations, WIFIA is a new finance tool to help communities address essential water and wastewater infrastructure projects at a lower cost, saving consumers money on their water bills.

In June, more than 230 mayors from across the United States convened in Dallas, Texas for the U.S. Conference of Mayors? (USCM) 82nd annual meeting. The issue of water was a critical topic of discussion this year for the Mayors Water Council and for the USCM within sessions involving discussions on energy and environment.

Under a House spending bill released last month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) would get 9 percent less funding in 2015 from 2014, and would see its staffing level capped at 1989 levels.The bill, the 2015 Interior and Environment Appropriations bill, released by the House Appropriations Committee, includes funding for the Department of the Interior, EPA, the Forest Service, the Indian Health Service and various independent and related agencies.

In a spirited event at the conclusion of the ACE14, John Donahue, chief executive officer of North Park (Ill.) Water District, on June 11, accepted the ceremonial AWWA gavel and began his term as president. The Gavel Passing Ceremony was the culmination of the five-day conference that drew water professionals and water technology providers to Boston.

On July 15, quasar energy group, a Cleveland-based waste-to-energy company, held an event for more than 150 municipal representatives, public officials and members of the media to tout the progress and celebrate the grand opening of its anaerobic digestion facility which provides wastewater treatment services for the City of Wooster and surrounding areas.

At the time of this issue?s publication, the Los Angeles Times reported that the agricultural industry is facing $1 billion in lost revenue while the state could wind up paying an additional $500 million for groundwater pumping. Among the many questions the situation poses, one is, ?How do city leaders cope with these challenges??

The U.S. EPA is awarding $2.1 million to 37 organizations in 17 states and Puerto Rico to help protect and restore urban waters, improve water quality and support community revitalization and other local priorities.

The International Private Water Association (IPWA) will hold a Financial Tools conference call on Thursday, July 31 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. (EST). The focus will be a review of Singapore International Water Week 2014.

American Rivers and Western Resource Advocates, recently issued a report that identifies conservation, reuse and other innovative solutions that could eliminate Western water shortages stemming from the over-taxed and stressed Colorado River.
