AWWA releases statement on war in Ukraine

The American Water Works Association (AWWA) this week released a statement on the war in Ukraine. The organization also directed members and water sector professionals to resources they can reference if they wish to help amid the ongoing conflict that has, among other hardships, left many Ukrainians without access to safe drinking water.

When people are in need, AWWA members always respond with generous hearts and offers of assistance. The images coming out of Ukraine are especially painful. The loss of human life and destruction of cities has moved many of you to contact AWWA with questions about where to donate. As water professionals, we know that the devastation we are witnessing threatens the availability of water for consumption, sanitation and fire protection. Although AWWA cannot serve as an international relief organization, we do want to pass along a couple of possibilities for those of you wishing to give.

UNICEF
UNICEF states that it’s “working to ease extreme hardships brought on by seven years of armed conflict and to meet urgent and escalating needs for safe water, health care, nutrition and protection.”

International Committee of the Red Cross
According to its web site, “ICRC water engineers and doctors aim to help more than 3 million people access clean water and improve the living conditions of more than 66,000 whose homes have been damaged by heavy fighting.”

Thank you all for your kindness and generosity. You continue to demonstrate that water professionals are the best kind of people.
